Comprehend Languages

Casting Time

i Activity Ritual

For the duration, you empathise the literal significant of any spoken language that yous hear. You lot also empathise any written language that you see, but you must be touching the surface on which the words are written. It takes about 1 infinitesimal to read 1 page of text.

This spell doesn't decode underground messages in a text or a glyph, such every bit an arcane sigil, that isn't function of a written language.

  • This mixed with the lip reading from observant with invisibility is amazing for stealth intel gathering.

  • Just added this to my Cabalistic Trickster but it's not showing up as a ritual.

  • I can never empathise why this spell isn't available to clerics, at least knowledge clerics. Since a Clericc cast Tongues and all that.

  • I find taking the 'Ritual Caster: Wizard' feat a fantastic add-on for the cleric. You theoretically any ritual the Magician can learn, provided your DM gives you a way of accessing them. Information technology gives you Cover Languages, also as some very useful rituals like Find Familiar, Unseen Servant, Tiny Hut and Alarm.

The other rituals are pretty handy besides, though some like Illusory Script and Magic Mouth might exist a little niche.

  • I like how Clerics tin can cast Tongues just non Comprehend Languages, non even the Knowledge Cleric. Very cool.

No information technology isn't. Well, information technology is, but information technology doesn't interact with lip reading. "... spoken communication *that yous hear*."

  • I'k late, merely Arcane Tricksters aren't ritual casters.

What is it with you and your casting spellwords? And can I accept a list of them?

  • Hypothetically, would it piece of work if I Notice Thoughts on a creature that think in a unlike language and Comprehend Languages on myself?

  • Hypothetically, would it work if I Detect Thoughts on a fauna that retrieve in a unlike language and Comprehend Languages on myself?

tl;dr: This won't piece of work, but you might exist able to utilize detect thoughts anyways.

The Bad News:  I don't think this would work. Cover Languages lets you sympathise "spoken language that you hear." Detect Thoughts describes how you read a creatures mind and know its thoughts, but those thoughts are not A) spoken past the target, nor or they B) heard by you. Cover Languages doesn't seem to employ here.

The Good News: Notice Thoughts does non specify that you need to share a common language. It does not work on a creature who "doesn't speak any language" only does not specify you demand a common language. Unfortunately this leaves some ambiguity, because while it does say you lot can "read" and "learn" the creatures thoughts it never explicitly says yous take the ability to empathize them. This leaves a lot of room for interpretation either way. To complicate things fifty-fifty further, some spells specify they don't require a mutual linguistic communication (e.1000. Telepathic Bail) other spells specify that they do require a common language (e.yard. Modify Memory) and so nosotros can't fifty-fifty become off the logic that they mentioned X there, so if they meant X they would accept mentioned it hither too, therefore we can assume not X. Ultimately I'd argue that Detect Thoughts A) involves mind to mind contact and B) is a divination spell, both like Telepathic Bond merely both unlike Change Memory (which is verbal and an enchantment) and then I would probably interpret Discover Thoughts as working more like Telepathic Bail and not requiring a mutual language, but it'due south based on really, really slim show. It's pretty much a toss upwardly.

  • A lot of people might overlook a very important part of the Encompass Languages spell. The spell lets you lot you lot empathise the literal significant of any spoken language that you hear. Emphasise on literal meaning. While it might non seem very important for someone who only speaks one language, but let me put information technology this fashion: for native english language speakers, if you hear "tell me nigh it" after you bluster most something, you lot understand that the listener feels the same way equally you, while my starting time reaction would be to say "simply I have but washed that, were y'all not listening?".

  • Is it an fault that Clerics can't cast Comprehend Languages?
I have a Noesis domain cleric and realised that in that location's really no style for him to read foreign languages! Channel Divinity: Noesis of the Ages grants skill/tool proficiency for ten minutes, only I don't think languages a "skill"? (In RAW game terms!)
I was thinking that when he gets into 3rd level spells then Tongues would do it, but that'southward spoken comprehension merely.
Does this seem like a large gap to anyone else? Or am I only a munchkin?
